Gomel Regional Charitable Fund "Help for Chernobyl Children" was first registered as an independent, public, non governmental, non political organization under the name of Gomel regional department of Bielorussian Charitable Fund "For Chernobyl Children" by decision No279 of 17.12.1990 taken by Gomel Regional Soviet of People's Deputies. The present day name was registered by Gomel Regional Soviet of People's Deputies' decision N 194 of 01.06.1993. The leadership of the Fund is realized by the Coordination Soviet consisting of the representatives of the most affected by Chernobyl disaster districts - Khoiniki, Vetka, Bragin, Dobrush, Narovlya, Mozyr, Kalinkovichi. During the time of its existing the Fund has established connections with a number of public organizations in different countries. Since 1990 the Chairman of the Fund has been elected Koretsky Gennady, physicist by profession. The Fund has been awarded an honorable medal of the Peace Fund.
The major projects of the fund
1. Starting since 1990 in C.I.S. and 8 countries of Western Europe there has been organized sanitation of 40 000 children (including those with leukemia, oncological diseases, diabetes) living in the areas of Gomel region exposed to radioactive contamination.
2. 181 convoys of humanitarian help have delivered more than 2 525 tons of goods, the majority being medicines and medical equipment. The value of the goods is declared to be equal to about USD 10 million. But it should be taken into consideration that the value indicated is only 10 per cent of the wholesale price as the producing enterprises donated the goods to the public organizations for realizing charitable projects in Chernobyl zone.
3. There have been organized probation courses for 19 doctors in the leading clinics of Germany and Italy.
4. Together with the Institute of Medical Radiology named after Otto Hug, Munich, the Fund has been participating first in establishing and now in operating the Thyroid Gland Center attached to Gomel Regional Endocrinological Dispensary. The capacity of the Center is examining 10 000 children per year. The total value of the project is 5,5 million DM.
5. Together with A.N.P.AS.(Association of Social Help to Population, Italy) the Fund has organized regularly operating courses for training professional social psychologists. This project is realized together with Gomel State University named after F. Skorina where the courses are delivered and with Pisa University, Italy.
6. On the basis of Gomel Regional Cardiological Dispensary together with A.N.P.AS. the Fund participates in establishing the Centre of Cardio-surgery. The project envisages training medical staff of Gomel in accordance with international protocols, performing operations both in Gomel and Italy and also providing technical equipment of the Centre.
7. Together with Gomel department of Bielorussian Republican Society "Children in Trouble" the Fund took part in the program of sending to Italy the children having oncological diseases of thyroid glands to be sanitated there. Due to this program there has been concluded the protocol between the Ministry of Health Protection of Belarus and Azienda Ospedaliera Pisana - Ospedale S.Chiara the aim of which is treating children with thyroid tumors in Italy.
8. Together with the UNESCO International Information Center "Inmedcentre" the Fund has been fulfilling the program of determining the medical value of sanitating the children abroad. Moreover by realizing this project it is envisaged to examine the children from the psychological point of view before, during and after the course of sanitation abroad.
9. Together with Gomel Association bringing up children-invalids with cerebral paralysis diagnosis and spinal pathologies and Berlin Society "Children of Chernobyl" the Fund participates in establishing the Center of Social Rehabilitation "Yulia" for the children having indicated above pathologies. The project is financed by the European Community.
10. Together with Gomel public organization "Children diabetes" and A.N.P.AS., Italy, the Fund started establishing Gomel medical center "Children diabetes". In the frames of this programme there has already been organized sanitation of the children with the diagnosis "diabetes" and delivering insulin to Gomel Regional Endocrinological Dispensary.
11. Together with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, Gomel Regional Executive Committee, Health Protection Board, Gomel State University after F.Skorina and A N.P.AS. the Fund takes part in realizing the project of deinstitutionalization of Gomel region minors.
12. The Fund takes part in establishing Gomel Regional Charitable Social and Cultural Centre "Prometei" for old-aged people, invalids and their families.
13. The Fund realizes search and establishes direct and long-term connections between medical and children's institutions of Gomel region and foreign countries.
14. The Fund provides support to the unique in Belarus "House of children" located in the women's prison (Gomel).
