Carmen Electra, in case you didn't know who she is, is the host
of MTV's "Singled Out", and she is doing a much better than job
than Jenny McCarthy ever did (although it doesn't take much).
She is also a former Prince protege that he found around 1991 out
in L.A..
Carmen Electra is originally from a town near Cincinnati, Ohio
called White Oak. She went to the"School of Creative and
Performing Arts" and her real name is Tara Patrick. She got the
name Carmen Electra because Prince told her she looked like a
Carmen and she chose Electra for her last name after a
Goddess.
While in L.A. for a couple of weeks, she received offers to be in
an all-girl rap band. She didn't make it into the band, Prince
had other ideas for her. Like her solo recording deal for
Paisley Park Records. But, the album kept being delayed and only
surfaced when even Prince had given up hope of ever seeing it
released. No one was interested apart from a couple of Prince
fans who had the hardest time even finding the album in
shops.
It seemed Carmen Electra's career had just gone the same way the
careers of so many of Prince's proteges' -- male and female --
had gone: down the shitter.
But these days, there's just no escaping from the busty babe ever
since she relaunched her career by posing for Playboy in
May 1996.
As a lot of Playboy models before her, Carmen's appearance
wasn't limited to just that session. She's also featured in the
video Playboy Cheerleaders, in which she sings a
song entitled "2-4-6-8".
Carmen's comeback started on October 4, 1990, when Lisa Berger, MTV's senior vice president, announced that Carmen would take over for Jenny McCarthy (also a Playboy veteran) as co-host for Chris Hardwick on MTV's Singled Out
starting February 10, 1997 -- for at least 65 episodes.
Carmen Electra and her dancers, The Nightmare Creations,
performed during MTV's 6th annual Rock 'N Jock B-Ball
Jam on October 26, 1996. She also appeared as a
presenter at the 7th annual Billboard Music Awards
held on December 4, 1996 at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.
Carmen also starred in a comic book called Embrace,
published by Lonmdon NIght Studios. The first issue, "Kill Me
Softly", is now available in three versions:a regular one, an
NC-17 one, and a signed platinum limited edition.
In January 1997, the New York Daily News announced Carmen
was going to replace Pamela Lee -- yet another
Playboy veteran -- on Baywatch. Carmen had
occasionaly appeared on the spin-off Baywatch
Nights, and in April 1997, Carmnen signed a five-year
contract with the show.
Carmen is also now starring in a "teen-oriented" (i.e.
functioning brain optional) film, Good Burger, due
the summer 1997. She portrays a seductress, Roxanne, charged
with stealing a secret sauce recipe from a competing hamburger
joint.
She has also been shooting a calendar for Landmark, a
preview was published with the article in Vibe. Expect it
on the market by the end of 1997.
However, not all is well in Carmen's life. Her relationship with
B-Real of Cypress Hill has ended, which puts her
plans for a new album in jeopardy (he was the producer). But
Carmen claims an album will appear later this year -- ater all,
she had recorded several demos. Then again, she announced her
plans for a new album "by the end of 1996" when she posed for
Playboy last year, and nothing came of that.
Lastly, Carmen was also a presenter at the Music Video
Production Association Awards which took place at El Rey
Theater in Los Angeles on May 1, 1997.
You can e-mail all the MTV VJ's -- including Carmen -- at MTVVJs@aol.com (best put "Carmen
Electra" as part of the subject line). Expect to wait a little
while for an answer. You aren't the only hormonally racing guy
like me to e-mail her.
