Sunshades and sunscoop are introduced to Hong Kong in an unprecedented scale here - raising energy efficiency and minimising running cost of the bank.

Characteristic

• Sunscoop installed reflects sufficient sunlight into the building during day time using the simple principle of reflections by mirrors, but with precise calculations
• A 30-ton welded space frame clad in aluminium is supported by steel beams attached to the Vierendeel masts at 12/F
• 480 mirrors on its upper surface adhered to 20 aluminium blades, each with its own motor
• Computer controls the movement of the mirrors to follow seasonal change of the sun angle
• Light reflected by the sunscoop is directed to an array of concave anodised aluminium mirrors at 11/F over the atrium (shaped by daylighting studies)
• Auxiliary glare control by computer-operated blinds along the south side of the double-story space
• Sunshade louvers for both heat and glare control in order to maximise view and transparency
• Grazed soffit transmits daylight into the plaza at ground level
