Cladding usually protects the inner construction elements against deterioration and gives a different texture to the outer surface. For this HSBC headquarter, its role is no exception.

• As the surface to be cladded is highly irregular due to the complex joints and intersections, computer is employed to handle the manufacture of claddings instead of conventional rolling, cutting and welding methods
• Fluoropolymer outermost coating offers the most powerful protection to the humidity and salt spray in Hong Kong; and also easy maintenance

Claddings on masts have a role as critical as the masts themselves. It safeguards the structure against erosions by salt, scratches, humidity, etc. The life span of the fluoropolymer layer was originally set to 50 years, but as the air pollution of Hong Kong continues to worsen, I don't think it can stand so long. Some parts of the claddings are already torn slightly.
