Illinois 40 is a north-south route running north out of the Peoria area to Sterling, then turning more northwesterly to end at Mount Carroll.

IL40 ends at I-74 in East Peoria soon after crossing the Illinois River.

It passes through these towns: Mount Carroll, Chadwick, Milledgeville, Sterling, Rock Falls, Buda, Camp Grove, Bradford, Edelstein, Peoria, East Peoria.

Since two routes with the same number intersected each other, confusion ensued. Thus, IL 88 was changed to IL 40, which was its former name anyway.
