Illinois 173 straddles the Wisconsin border for the eastern half of the state. It runs from Zion to Machesney Park.

It passes through these towns: Machesney Park, Caledonia, Poplar Grove, Capron, Harvard, Hebron, Richmond, Channel Lake, Antioch, Zion.

Notable places: Within a roughly 2 mile by 2 mile square on the southwest corner of I-90/I-39/US51 and IL173 (though there's no interchange) lies Rock Cut State Park, the getaway location of the Rockford area. It hosts hiking, biking, boating, and fishing on Pierce Lake.

IL173 also passes Chain o' Lakes State Park in the northwest corner of Lake County.
