Palestine-Hutsonville jumped out to a
20-0 lead on Little Illini Conference foe Martinsville Saturday
evening, but Pioneers’ head coach Scott Zane couldn’t relax.
“It was big for us to get up early,”
Zane said after his Pioneers won 46-21. “But we let them come back and
get some confidence.”
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Roberts
connected with senior Jude Holscher for a 40 yard touchdown pass and
Daylon Siverly returned an interception 25 yards for a pair of
first-quarter scores by PHS-HHS. Roberts put the Pioneers ahead 20-0
with a 16-yard scamper in the second quarter before Martinsville
answered back.
Five touchdowns were recorded in the
second quarter, three by Palestine-Hutsonville and two by Martinsville.
The Bluestreaks posted a 10 play, 63
yard drive that was completed on a 2-yard run by Phillip Higginbotham
to cut the Pioneers’ margin to 20-7.
Roberts hit Holscher for a 55 yard TD
play three minutes later, while Martinsville answered with a 53-yard
pass play from Harry Downey to Dylan Cribelar. Palestine-Hutsonville
closed out the first-half scoring with an 11-yard run by Roberts to
give the Pioneers a 32-14 advantage at the intermission.
“We made some adjustments at
halftime,” Zane said. “We keyed on Cribelar and Martinsville did some
nice things in the first half.”
Roberts opened the second half with
an 85 yard kickoff return, but a penalty brought the ball back to the
48 yard line, and then the Pioneers lost a fumble to Martinsville three
plays later.
“That kickoff return could have
really changed the complexion of the game,” Zane pointed out. “But our
mistakes gave Martinsville some momentum in the third quarter.”
The next drive for the Bluestreaks
stalled in PHS-HHS territory, but Martinsville intercepted a Ryan
Roberts pass and returned it to the two yard line.
Andy Chambers ran up the middle for
one yard and Harry Downey dove into the endzone for a TD which cut the
Palestine-Hutsonville lead to 32-21 with 6:34 left in the third quarter.
“I got a little nervous in the third
quarter,” Zane added. “We started to get a little fatigued.”
Leg cramps kept Roberts off the field
on Palestine-Hutsonville’s next possession and forced Holscher to play
quarterback.
But the PHS-HHS sophomore quarterback
returned on the next possession and Jake Milam led the Pioneers on a
three play, 43 yard drive, with a 25-yard scoring run.
In the fourth quarter, Jake Milam
scored on a 14-yard run after a blocked punt gave PHS-HHS the ball on
the Martinsville 19 yard line, for the final 46-21 score.
“It was a win, but I never felt
comfortable,” Zane said. “Mistakes hurt us tonight. We’re going to have
to address that and eliminate them.”
Holscher led the PHS-HHS rushing
attack with 97 yards on 14 attempts and he caught two touchdown passes
for 95 yards, while Jake Milam added 90 yards rushing. Phillip
Higginbotham paced Martinsville with 99 yards rushing on 30 attempts
and a TD; quarterback Harry Downey completed six of 12 passes for 112
yards and two touchdowns.
Ryan Roberts only completed three
passes for the Pioneers, but two of them were for touchdowns. He was
3-of-13 for 130 yards.
Palestine-Hutsonville (1-1, 1-1 LIC)
will travel to Lawrenceville for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday.
