Talented Casey unloads on Martinsville
By Terri Cox, Staff Writer

MARTINSVILLE -- The Casey-Westfield Warriors lived up to their No. 6 state ranking Friday night as they defeated the Martinsville Bluestreaks 57-0 in the season opener.

"We came out and executed very well at times and got the season off to a good start," said Casey coach Keith Sinclair. "We were able to get a lot of kids playing time.

"Aaron Warner and Daniel Moore both ran the ball very well and Zack Briggs did a nice job of running in the quarterback role. Brennan Ragon ran the offense well during his time at quarterback.

"Defensively, Chase Boyd had a big night for us," Sinclair added.

Martinsville's coach Rick Hildebrandt was disappointed in the loss, but was proud of the effort and heart his team showed.

"We knew it was an uphill battle (tonight) and they lived up to their No. 6 ranking. They have a very potent backfield with Warner, Murphy and Moore and (Casey's) offensive line did a nice job," Hildebrant said. "I mean just look at them, they're loaded.

"Our kids played hard to the end and we got a couple banged up pretty good. Hopefully we can get them healthy for next week."

A scary moment for the Streaks came in the second quarter when senior Dylan Cribelar left the field by ambulance. Reports after the game confirmed that he suffered a slight shoulder injury.

Things got going early for the Warriors after forcing a Martinsville punt on the game's first possession. Casey needed just 10 plays to march 69 yards and cap the drive on a one-yard run by Warner. Nick Murphy added the PAT.

Martinsville put together a drive that exhausted the first quarter, but was forced to punt.

Following a nice punt return by Brandon Simpson, the Warriors headed out for their second offensive series of the season. It was a short lived, but productive one as Warner took the hand-off from Ragon and broke into the open field, rambling 73 yards for his second score of the night. The kick failed, but Casey still held a 13-0 advantage.

The Warriors added three more scores in the second quarter, a 41-yard run by Warner, a seven-yard scamper by Simpson and a 50-yard pass from Briggs to Mitch Yates to take a 34-0 lead into the intermission.

Warner led all rushers with 155 yards on nine attempts with three touchdowns. Moore added 75 yards on five tries and a score while Craig tallied 60 yards on four carries and a touchdown as well.

Martinsville was led by Phillip Higginbotham with 45 yards on nine tries while Cribelar finished with 34 yards on eight rushes in less than two quarters of work.

The Warriors (1-0, 1-0) will travel to Red Hill next Friday while Martinsville (0-1, 0-1) will face Hutsonville/Palestine Saturday at Robinson.
