Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated
The Colony of the Illinois Institute of Technolgy

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. During a time when racial tension was high and educational opportunities for African-Americans were scarce, seven dynamic women took on the challenge of providing those opportunities to those most in need by creating a sisterhood of women dedicated to educational achievement and community uplift - Sigma Gamma Rho!

The Founders of our beloved sisterhood are:

Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little (Primary Founder)
Hattie Mae Redford
Vivian White Marbury
Dorothy Whiteside
Cubena McClure
Nannie Mae Johnson
Bessie Martin

In 2004, the legacy of the Founders was still alive when Sigma Gamma Rho launched efforts to create the first chapter of any National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organization on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology. The journey was difficult and attempts to thwart the chapter's efforts were numerous, but Sigma Gamma Rho has always thrived in adversity and our perseverence was rewarded!

On March 13, 2004, the Colony of the Illinois Institute of Technology was established through the induction of our charter members:

Soror Tiffany Lomax
Soror Yetunde Awolola

The Colony has been active in providing social and community programming on the campus and in the community and continues to let Sigma's light shine as we work ceaselessly for

Greater Service, Greater Progress
