Bears Down Bluejays
Las Vegas Not Only Sight of Wild
Animal Mauling
(CBC)– It was Siegfried and Roy all over
again. Holy Family visited Bluejay Field
and mauled the home team 27-6. The Bears grabbed the Bluejays by the throat
and never let go. The game began well
for the Jays. After the kickoff, Holy
Family dropped back to pass. The OLOM
player stepped in front of the receiver and took off for the end zone. At the 10-yard line, the flying Jay was
caught from behind and dragged down from behind. The Jays took over on
offense. After a series of penalties,
OLOM scored its initial touchdown of the season. The PAT failed, and OLOM led for the first
time in the season. The Bears then
took over the game. They methodically
drove 53 yards down the field to tie the game. On the ensuing possession, the penalty bug
bit the Bluejays again. On a fourth
and 23, the OLOM punt was blocked inside their own 10-yard line. The Bears scored again and converted the
PAT. Score at the half: Bears 14 Bluejays 6.
After the intermission highlighted by a stellar
performance by the OLOM $2000 Band, the game continued to be dominated by
large, furry carnivores. The Bears
used the passing game to score two more times. The final score: Holy Family 27 OLOM 6.
At the post game news conference, Coach Chris
looked disappointed and drained. “We
don’t play as a team. We need to
because if we try to make plays as individuals, we will continue to lose,”
sighed the increasingly old-looking mentor.
Coach Pat had another perspective, “We need to be nasty. We just have a team of good boys.” OLOM falls to 0-3-0 for the first time in
103 games.

OLOM Travels “Across
the River”
(Anna Kournakova.com) – The Jays travel to another parish for
the first time in 2003 when they take on an improved CHS-PC Hornet
squad. The Hornets have struggled in
recent years, but this year’s club is very competitive. The Hornets are led by a very elusive
running back and a defense that has several big linemen. Again, OLOM will be the smaller team. Catholic-PC runs a split back offense and
an Oklahoma front on
defense. “We will be challenged
again,” groaned Coach Joe. “As Coach
Pat mentioned after the last game, we need to
get nasty.”
EAGLES CONSOLIDATE
(USA
Today) – STM consolidated its death grip on the top of the USA Today/ESPN
Termite Football poll after a convincing 28-0 thumping of then second ranked
St. Alphonsus. Holy Family jumped to
its highest ranking in history after a methodical victory over OLOM. St. Aloysius rebounded to come in
third. St. Alphonsus dropped to fourth
while Sacred Heart just keeps on winning.
The Tigers round out the poll with a solid fifth place showing.

UNCLE FESTER’s FOLLIES
(FNS) – To paraphrase former Mississippi State footballer and famed storyteller Jerry Clower, just shoot up in here amongst us -one of us
has GOT to have some relief. That will pretty much be the prevailing
mood when the Our Lady of Mercy Bluejays visit the Catholic High
School
- Pointe Coupee Hornets this Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Chris Hannie will
lead his 0-3 Jays in search of that elusive first win of the season against
the 1-3 False River eleven whose only win this season came back in Week Two
(2) when they walloped the Holy Ghost Patriots 30-0. "Certainly
we're concerned with getting a win, but I'm more concerned right now
with basics - playing with some cohesion, playing with some
urgency, playing with some meanness," offered Hannie.
"We just haven't been a very good football team thus far, and I
take full responsibility for that."
That may be an
understatement - OLOM has been outscored 74-6 in their three losses, two of
which have been whitewashes. Once again, the Jays will be outsized when
they face the Anglers, whose losses have come against the 3rd, 4th, and
7th-ranked teams in this week's Delacroix Index. Look for
an improved flock of Bluejays this Sunday, but I'm not sure that it
will be enough to notch their first victory of the season. CHSPC 20,
OLOM 8.
DELACROIX INDEX 2003
|
The Delacroix Index is a progressive statistical formula
that has historically proven to be an accurate measurement when applied to
the performance of an organized group of athletes versus another organized
group of athletes. Derived by HM Delacroix III, it is the one of the few
known formulas to incorporate the strength of one team’s schedule against
another’s. The Index basically reflects all the intangibles that can affect
the performance of any team, on any given day, regardless of the
circumstances.

St. Jude
6 OLOM 0
|
From October 14, 1998
(St. Jude Field) – The St. Jude
Cougars handed the OLOM Bluejays a rare opening-game defeat here
today. The Cougars dominated the
game in the first half scoring the game's only touchdown. St. Jude ran the ball at will and threw
when necessary.
OLOM had no answer with their offense. Numerous penalties and missed assignments
spelled doom for the Bluejays from the opening kickoff. The highlight of frustration for OLOM came when the offense had first and ten on the Cougar
end of the field. After three
consecutive illegal procedures, the Jays had first and 25! The special teams contributed to the loss
in their unique way: a blocked punt.
The only highlight was the play of the defense in the second half. The OLOM defense dominated the Cougars
the entire half.
"We need some serious work," a dejected
Coach Pat said in the post-game news conference. "I had nothing to say to the squad
after the game. We played with no
emotion and less efficiency."
Coach Mark was more reflective with his words. "Someone approached me after the
game to offer congratulations for how the team looked. They also asked me what would Coach Chris think.
I said that regardless of whether we won or lost, Coach Chris would
be upset. We played so, so
bad," Coach Mark said softly.
Coach Chad
voiced a personal angle to Sunday's game.
"My cousin plays for the Cougars. I have to listen to him talk about it
until we can set the record straight."
Coach Chris had an opportunity to view the game
tape. He did not want to comment,
but after gentle cajoling by this reporter, he had this comment: "What I saw sickened and saddened
me. The team resembled a typical
OLOM team only because they wore the blue headgear. We made mistakes, penalties -- there will
be no more of this, beginning this week."
Some interesting statistics about Sunday's game. Since 1990 (67 games), OLOM has been shut
out three times, including this game with St. Jude. Until Sunday, the Bluejays have had only
one other punt blocked in 77 punts.
The last time OLOM started 0-1: 1990. (That team finished the season 8-2-0.) Finally, the Bluejays have never
been penalized three consecutive times for anything, much less a false
start.
NOTE: This game
occurred while Coach Chris was taking a break after the death of his son,
Patrick.

De-emphasize Football at OLOM
Say it ain’t so!
(Drudgereport.com)
– Sources close to OLOM have told Drudge that there is an underground
movement to de-emphasize football. The
source, speaking on a guarantee of anonymity, told Drudge Report that Mercy
has never been a football power, so any attempts to improve are
fruitless. The size disparity is so
great that potential players are forgoing football to pursue less “risky”
sports. The source also insisted that
“burnout” is another problem. OLOM has
a 3rd and 4th grade team, unlike other CSAL
schools. By the time a player reaches
6th or 7th grade, the player is simply tired of
football. The source stated that fall
baseball is the sport of choice. Fall
baseball, played in the place of football, is followed in the spring by
spring ball which is followed by select baseball during the summer. Summer select is followed by fall ball,
etc. However, the source insisted that
baseball is unique, and that playing year round for years would not cause any
problems with “burnout.” When asked
what sport should become the focus of the OLOM sports program, the source
answered quickly: basketball. When asked if basketball was also a game
that relied on size (a trait the source emphasized was lacking at OLOM), the
source was befuddled. Perhaps the
source had not considered this; it appeared that way to this reporter. Stay tuned, boys and girls!
