SILVER BRIDGE COLLAPSE
On December 15, 1967 a 700 ft bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia to Gallipolis and Kanauga, Ohio, suddenly collapsed at about 5:00pm. In total 46 people would be killed, two of whom were never identified. The bodies are all buried in the Gallipolis town cemetery.
The Silver Bridge, built in 1928 and considered a engineering marvel was the only bridge crossing the Ohio river for miles each way, but the bridge had one major flaw. Unlike modern bridges that have fail safes where something can fail and the bridge will remain relatively safe, the Silver Bridge was like dominos, one thing fails then whole structure fails.
