Before I Was...There Were

The album from long ago...$10, my parent’s first house...$20,000, my grandparent’s many travels...$5,000, learning where I came from...priceless.

Long ago, and far, far away, there started something. Something not very big but influential, something that would affect the rest of humanity and my life. This event is unknown to even the wisest and the most intelligent. The beginning of life itself is a mystery.

My heritage starts back further away than anyone can really imagine. Some where, some place, it all happened, it all began. They developed and started a line of people who would end with me, here and now. They have affected the world in the smallest ways and made a huge difference. One was on the Mayflower, others in the wars. Though their names are never whispered secrets and forgotten, they live in not name but doings. My ancestors of old were apart of life and therefore took a part in making life for those after them. They discovered, questioned, explored, and wondered.

As of now, my oldest living relative is my grandmother who is in her early 80’s. Her husband recently died and she now lives with some of her children in Maine. There’s not much I know of her or what she has done. I know she lived a life suitable for her position and that she did as what was expected. She married and had eight children with a loving husband and kept an enjoyable household. Her children went off and made their own lives. Some getting married, others were finding jobs. My father, Matthew, came to Florida.

My other set of grandparents are still living and in instable health. Though, they have lived life certainly to the fullest! My grandparents have traveled everywhere to the most exotic places. They’ve brought back mostly memories and some much- awaited souvenirs to their grandchildren. They didn’t have quite as many children and only produced two daughters, my mother, Starr, and her younger and sometimes annoying sister, Cyndi. My mom came to Florida after spending two years at a college in upstate New York where she lived most of her life.

My parents met up at the University of Miami and were engaged six months after they met. The wedding was set for after my mother graduated and that’s when their life began together. After marriage, they had steady jobs and soon had a little surprise coming! It was my elder brother, Morgan, who was born. They moved a few years after to a less expensive place that was suitable to raise a family. Seven years down the road, a baby girl would be on the way.

Though I know not much of those who came before me, I do know that they were important and contributed to our world as we know it. The mysterious surrounding who they are and what specifically did will always remain. In a way, knowing only the fragments of their life is enough. Creating the events they were in and the things they did is so much better than knowing exactly whom they were and what they did. It lets me use my imagination.
