Documenting the history of writing is inevitably subjective. Due to the fact that it is an underground movement and the life span of works can be as brief as days, most of history is limited to word-of-mouth accounts. We here @149st have made a modest attempt to encapsulate the history. In addition to witnessing history first hand, we have spoken directly with many participants. We have chosen the medium of the Web over print due to its flexibility. Historical inaccuracy on the web can be addressed in a matter of minutes or hours. The print medium is not so forgiving. Keep in mind that this site is a work in progress and its aim is to build towards the truth.

The following is a list of some of the more unique and influential hand styles from New York City. These tags were chosen for immediate recognizability, uniqueness, visual appeal and inspiration to the culture.

The throw-up is derived from what are known as bubble letters. They developed as a means of creating a representation of the name more substantial than a tag, but less time and paint consuming than a piece.

Art and throw-up may seem like a contradiction in terms, but a well executed throw up is in it self an art form, technically if not aesthetically. A fatcaped outline and misted in fill-in with a complimenting final outline executed with blinding speed is not necessarily an easy task. The following is a listing and display of some of the more memorable of NYC.
