Water Testing at Aliso Creek
Walked the trail behind the school to the creek to test for temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and bacteria.
Newport Beach Clean-Up
This beach is now smoke-free, and those caught smoking will be fined! This clean-up was to promote public awareness of this new law and to make a statement that our beaches are not ashtrays. Members from our school also got interviewed by Cal State Fullerton.
World Water Monitoring Day
32nd anniversary of the Clean Water Act, which regulated the discharge of pollutants into the water
Huntington Beach Clean-Up
This beach is also smoke-free, but our group collected about 1000 cigarette butts and bags of trash! Each volunteer received a free cloth bag, which can be used instead of paper and/or plastic bags when grocery shopping.
::December 4 Holiday Crafts Fair: Winter Wonderland
We taught elementary school kids how to make crafts for different cultural winter holidays. Our booth was Kwanzaa. We made candles filled with candy and placemats out of construction paper.
::December 11 Human Broom
Volunteered in a beach clean-up at Huntington Beach. We only collected 8 cigarette butts, but we found a lot of styrofoam and toxic spray bottles. There were also several guest speakers (from Surfrider Foundation and Back That Ash Up) to educate us about current environmental issues, such as the Santa Ana watershed and second-hand smoking. We also got free food and raffle prizes!
::December 21 Winter Solstice
End of the fall season.
