SNOWSTORM Events

Here are the list of events. Unless said otherwise, all following events award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons.

Tug of War: Outdoor event with a weight limit of 700 lbs. for GS/MS units and 800 lbs. for VC/EP/SSS/BS units. Each unit will weigh-in and have a hand of each tugs team member stamped during the leader meeting. Two teams will attempt to pull the opposing team’s rope marker past a center cone. No cleated shoes or boots will be allowed, no ground trenching, and no tying, wrapping, or crossing the rope around participants. Mariner Scouts/Girl Scouts and Venture Crews/Explorer Posts/Sea Scout Ships/Boy Scout Troops will compete in separate, single elimination brackets.

Scooter Obstacle Course (ADULT/ALUMNI EVENT ALSO): Indoor relay - 3 members. Individuals will sit/kneel on scooters and maneuver a set course. Time/accuracy scoring. Tennis shoes only.

Orienteering: Outdoor - 2 members. At a given starting point, each member will be given a set of readings to walk off and follow by degrees. The correct final destination of their course will be their goal. The two times will also be added together. Time/accuracy scoring.

Snow Shoeing: Outdoor relay - 2 members. Race will be over a set course. Time/accuracy scoring.

Sled Pull: Outdoor relay - 4 members. Each person will take turns pulling the sled over a set course, most likely in pairs (one will pull; when they get to the finish, they’ll switch; after that, the second pair will go). Time/accuracy scoring.

First-Aid: Indoor - 4 members. Teams will be given a first-aid scenario. Team must diagnose and demonstrate treatment where possible. Those treatments which cannot be demonstrated must be explained. Time/accuracy scoring.

Snow Sculpting: Outdoor - unlimited numbers, 2 minimum. Conditions permitting, each unit will have a 10’ by 10’ area of snow in which to build their sculpture. Only a snow cube, bucket, shovel, and spoons can be used, unless otherwise approved by an official. Spray bottle for clear, uncolored water may be used. No items will be provided by the Snowstorm staff. Other items and coloring may not be used. Sculpting will take place from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (judging). Originality, creativity, and neatness scoring.

Drilling and Maneuvering: Indoor - unlimited numbers, 5 minimum. Time limit 3-5 minutes. Drill area will be 25 yards by 25 yards. Formal dress inspection on uniformity of dress and presentation of unit outside of gym. Then units must change shoes for competition in gym (non-marking soles only). Points will be deducted for continuous cadence calling. Out of respect for judges and other units, only serious participants are asked to compete. Uniformity of dress, originality, use of drilling area, spacing, marching and maneuvering, and execution of required movements (Attention, At Ease, Dress Right, Forward March, Right and Left Face, Right and Left Flanks, Column Right and Left, About Face, To the Rear March, Present Arms, Halt, and Parade Rest) scoring.

Knots: Indoor relay - 4 members. Each member is expected to know the identification, USE OF, and how to tie the following knots: Bowline, Sheetbend, Figure Eight, Square, Clove Hitch, Sheepshank, 2 Half-Hitches, and Tautline Hitch.

Life Jacket Relay: Indoor relay - 4 members. Each team member in turn must properly put on and secure the regulation Coast Guard approved life jacket provided, remove it, and return to the starting line to the next member. Required method of securing life jacket will be demonstrated at start of event. Time/accuracy scoring.

Line Toss: Indoor – 3 members. Each team member, in turn, will attempt 1 practice toss and 3 competitive tosses of a weighted line through a target bracket for 1, 3, or 5 points. Only the initial contact—and not the bouncing—counts. Accuracy scoring. Time limit will be used for tie-breaking.

Surprise Event: Indoor - 4-6 members. Being combined with Code Flags for 2012. Two members of the team should know code flags. Details of the event will be given at the leaders’ meeting.

Trophy Awards

Best Overall: Separate awards for MS/GS and BS/SSS/VC/EP are given. Points systems is as follows: 1st place-40 points, 2nd place-20 points, 3rd place-10 points, and participation-5 points. Units will have their names engraved on a traveling plaque and will receive a personal trophy.

Best Drill Overall: Awarded to either 1st place GS/MS or 1st place BS/SSS/VC/EP unit. Traveling trophy will be awarded.

Which-a-ma-call-it Award: Surprise award with different criteria each year. In 1999, it was a Spirit Award; 2000, a Most Energetic Award; 2001, a Most Helpful Award; 2008, Most Respectful. Traveling trophy will be awarded.
