THE SERVICE

BB- You (Spanky) sing, Tommy plays guitar (?) who are the bassist and drummer?

SERVICE-BABY FACE SCHULTZ ON BASS. JOHN ON DRUMS.

BB- You've opened up for bands like rancid, the offspring, the damned and the business who is your favorite band to play with?

SERVICE-LOCALLY, WE LOVE PLAYING WITH BRASS TACKS. THOUGH, HONESTLY ARE FAVORITE TIMES AND BEST CROWDS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WITH THE DROPKICK MURPHY'S

BB- The art for both of your full lengths is really cool who does it?

SERVICE-JEREMY TUPTA, A VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF THE BANDS. HE IS A BRILLIANT TATTOO ARTIST AS WELL. [you can find examples of his work www.capitolcitytattoo.net/jeremy's_page.htm

BB- There has been three years between man's ruin and who's criminal why so long?

SERVICE-BASICALLY WE HAD NO RECORD DEAL. MOST OF THE SONGS ON THE "NEW" ALBUM ARE 2-3 YEARS OLD.

BB- The only time I ever heard of you touring was last year with DKM, do you have plans to tour later this year or why don't you tour?

SERVICE-WE WILL BE ON THE ROAD THIS SUMMER BRIEFLY. WE HAVE TOURED ON OUR OWN IN THE PAST. WE HAVE DONE NEW YORK, WE HAVE DONE CANADA. TOURING IS TUFF, THOUGH. WE ALL HAVE FULL TIME JOBS AND ARE HEAVILY INVOLVED WITH OTHER PROJECTS IN THE CITY AS WELL AS FAMILIES TO TAKE CARE OF AND SO ON. I'D LOVE TO GO ON TOUR, WHILE MAKING THE MONEY I MAKE NOW, AS WELL AS INSURANCE, BUT THAT WON'T HAPPEN ANY TIME SOON.

BB- When did the band start?

SERVICE-1993

BB- How have things been with GMM?

SERVICE-AS WELL AS EXPECTED. MARK AND THE REST OF THE BANDS HAVE BEEN VERY SUPPORTIVE.

BB- What was the first show you went to?

SERVICE(SPANKY)-THE FIRST SHOW I EVER WENT TO WAS THE BAD BRAINS, BACK IN LIKE 88. THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED. A LIFE ALTERING EXPERIENCE.

BB- A lot of your songs, Man's ruin and Common Bond Convict for instance, have almost a second chorus at the end is this just your song writing or is this influenced by someone else?

SERVICE-OUR'S REALLY. WE LIKE TO THROW A LITTLE CHANGE IN OUR SONGS. GIVE PEOPLE SOME MELODIC SINGALONGS. WE OFTEN HAVE MANY IDEAS FOR A SONG AND FITTING THEM ALL IN CAN LEAD TO SOME DISTINCT SOUNDS.

BB- I heard that your first full length, Man's Ruin is out of print, will it be re-released?

SERVICE-YES. IT WILL BE RE-RELEASED ON GMM, INCLUDING OUR FIRST TWO 7". SCHEDULED TO BE OUT THIS SUMMER, I SUGGEST CALLING GMM AND TELLING THEM IT SHOULD BE A TOP PRIORITY.

BB- If some one wants to order seven inches or merchandise what should they do?

SERVICE

PO BOX 1844

MILWAUKEE, WI.

53201-1844

BB- What's your favorite episode of the Simpsons?

SERVICE- HARD TO ANSWER, HELL YEAH. PERSONALLY I LIKE THE "MR. SPARKLE", THE "PULP FICTION", AND ALL HALLOWEEN EPISODES.

BB- On your first seven inch American Graffiti, the b-side has two songs about lost friends, Dead End and Someday is there a story behind either of these songs?

SERVICE-THERE IS PROBABLY A STORY BEHIND EVERY SONG WE HAVE. BUT, YOU ARE RIGHT, THESE TWO SONG DO HAVE TO DO WITH FRIENDS AND LOSING THEM FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. DEAD END DEALS WITH FRIENDS LOST TO THE DRUG CULTURE. SOMEDAY REFERS TO PEOPLE SELLING THEMSELVES OUT FOR THE NEXT FAD.

Why do they call you Spanky?

SERVICE-I HOPE YOU AREN'T EXPECTING SOME LEGENDARY STORY, IT REALLY IS QUITE TAME. I AM AN ONLY CHILD, AND I ALWAYS WANTED A BROTHER. WHEN I WENT TO SCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME, ALL THE OLDER KIDS ASKED IF I HAD ANY SIBLINGS. I OF COURSE DID NOT, BUT WANTED TO IMPRESS, SO I LIED AND MADE UP A STORY ABOUT MY LITTLE BROTHER SPANKY. I COULD HAVE KEPT THAT GOING, AT LEAST THROUGH THE THIRD GRADE, BUT MY BIG MOUTH BETRAYED ME ONCE AGAIN AND IT WASN'T LONG BEFORE THEY ALL NEW ME AND MY REAL STORY, THUS RETURNING THE NAME TO ME. IT HAS STUCK EVER SINCE THE FIRST GRADE.

BB Anything else you wanted to say?

SERVICE- I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU, BRENDAN FOR COMING OUT AND SUPPORTING THE SERVICE. BE A LEADER NOT A FOLLOWER.

In the year since I did this interview quite a few changes happened first and foremost The Service broke up. you can still check out their official site at www.theserviceusa.com but I don’t know if they’ve got still got the P.O. Box Second I don’t think that GMM is reprinting Man’s Ruin, but it is still available from time to time through DSS. Third Spanky was starting a record label I don’t know what happened to that. And I’m not sure but I think Spanky is involved with the band Bound to One from Milwaukee. My apologies to the Service and Spanky for not having this taken care of earlier. Also my apologies to John and Babyface Shultz for not having any good pictures of them.
