IRON CROSS

Everyone who listens to oi! knows at least of Iron Cross song, crucified. Now after 18 years Iron Cross is back together and just finished a national tour. These questions were answered by Sab Grey through e-mail, a big thank you to Mr. Grey for all of his help and patience.

BB- I know you lived in england for 11 years or so. Why'd you leave the U.S. and why did you come back?

IC- I went to the UK just to check things out. i.c. had broken up and I was kind of at a loose end. I came back because I missed my country and wanted to see it again.

BB- "Live for Now!" is out ow on Gmm why did you decide after so long to release a compilation of your previously recorded material?

IC- Well, to be honest I never knew anyone was interested in i.c. I had no idea that crucified was an "anthem" or any of it.

BB- You've stated in other interviews that IC didn't really have a perminant line up so who played what on the last tour and what do they do when their not touring with IC?

IC- well Pugs we got from Forced Reality. he lives in Conn. Dmitri Medevev plays bass. he lives in DC and does Russian translation and moves furniture. Kent Stacks plays drums. I've known him for about 20 years. he's a carpenter, like me. tell the truth this is the best line up we've ever had. i of course also do Sab Grey and the Articulate Rednecks and i play solo as Sab Grey.

BB- Outside of the chicago/Aruora fiasco how was the tour turn out? encouraging enought that IC will do another tour or Europe?

IC- We had so much fun and everyone was so good to us. I would still be in the van if I could. We go to Europe in the fall and we're working on some more US dates.

BB- what was the best show?

IC- That would be Houston, no... Austin, um... LA, no Portland, Denver. oh I don't know even Aurora was fun! This country kicks ass!

BB- You were playing hardcore/oi! here in America really before anyone else what influenced the IC sound?

IC- Really just the desire not to sound like all our friends' bands! We didn't want to sound like Minor Threat. THEY were Minor Threat. Or any of the other DC bands, we just wanted to do things our way.

BB- What music are you listening to now?

IC- i listen to a lot of Country. I don't mean crappy Faith Hill/Tim Mcgraw country I mean real country. I still listen to punk/oi. I also listen to blues, jazz, rockabilly and all that stuff.

BB- Charlie Danials, Johnny Cash or less mainstream stuff?

IC- yeah both those guys and stuff like willie nelson, george jones, emmylou harris, steve earle, webb pierce, bill monroe, hank thompson, dwight yoakam, you know all the good stuff.

BB-will fans of IC enjoy the articulate rednecks?

IC- Well, I sure hope so. We played a ska show with a great DC band called the Ratchet Boys. We kinda felt like the Blues Brothers in reverse. They dug it though. We had a lot of fun.

BB- any chance of incorperating this into an IC set or an articulates tour?

IC- i usually do it in the middle of a rednecks gig. sometimes acoustic country "Crucified" too.

BB- What was the last good book you read?

IC- I'm rereading one of my favorites right now- Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. I also read a great book called "The Flags Of Our Fathers" about the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Every American should read this book. BB- Just out of curosity have you ever read any Ambrose? My grandpa says Citzen Soldier is as close to the truth as he has ever read. IC- no i havent. got any recommendations? BB- Anything by Ambrose hes even got a really good book about building the railroads, but definitely "citzen soldier." BB-The Business just covered crucified for the Tribute to the Real OI! compilation, if you were going to cover another Oi! band who would if be and why?

IC- The Ruts-Staring at the Rude Boys. Because the Ruts were one of the greatest bands of all time and I've loved that song since I was 16.

BB- For those who don't know was the song crucified inspired by the symbol or was the symbol inspired by the song?

IC- Good question but I cant remember if they're related. I know the symbol was first but whether I consciously used that motif in the song I don't know.

BB-When you arn't touring what do you do?

IC- Work and play in my other bands and wait to go out on the road again! Haha!

BB- What do your wife and daughter think of IC?

IC- My Ex-wife-not much! And my kids (there's 3 of 'em) Arnet really aware of it. They know dad plays music but that's about it.

BB- How does it feel to know you inspired a generation of people and bands?

IC- i don't know about that, but thanks just the same.

BB- What is the one thing you want to let your fans know but have never said?

IC- Umm... I have a thing for French music. I really like Serge Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, Charles Aznavour and all that stuff. Oh dear...

Again many thanks to sab grey not only for IC's music but also for being a nice guy.
