January 2009

From the Director’s Chair

Happy New Year to one and all; I wish you a healthy, wealthy new year!  Here we are starting a new year and looking forward to riding season again.  I hope you have all submitted your ride ideas to Lynn; there is no time like the present to get the plans going.  We have already got some great things to look forward to and the first one is our holiday party on January 31st.  I look forward to seeing all of you there.  Until then, be safe and be happy.

Holiday Party

Get ready to party on Saturday, January 31, at Jan’s house.  The food sign up sheet was passed around at the meeting.  Rusty reported that she is putting together small gift/goodie bags for attendees.  Don’t miss the fun!   The location map and driving directions were published in the last newsletter and are repeated this month.  If you have any questions, call Rusty or Jan.

Old Business

The International Motorcycle Show is coming up on February 6, 7, & 8th.  Contact Rusty H. direct to sign up for working the WOW booth at the show.  Her email is

Lynn is collecting ride suggestions for the 2009 schedule – please help her out with your ideas.  You don’t have to lead the ride; just pass on info about what you think would be a good destination for a day ride.

New Business

Regarding the 2009 NWR flyer, Rusty L. suggested that we reduce the flyer to only one, 2-sided page with the regular cover page on one side with information about the chapter and the ride/activities schedule on the back side.  After discussion, it was decided that Liz will bring in a modified version to the January meeting for review.

Kim reported on the new Fox Valley Cycle contest – the Participation Challenge.  Information about this contest was distributed.  Kim said that FVC has another Mystery Ride in the planning stage plus a cookout and another contest.

Thanks to Marilyn for donating some U.S. map patches to be sold and the money collected to go to the chapter treasury.

The date has been set for the upcoming 2009 Dream Ride.  It will be held September 19 – 26 so mark your calendars and let the boss know.  Information on the ride will be forthcoming.

C.J. reported on the status of our adopted family.  They have received most of the furniture and other household goods they needed and had plenty of food to enjoy the holiday meals.  They are extremely grateful and wrote a very nice letter to NWR members who were so generous.

As previously agreed upon, the chapter also wrote a check to the Fountaindale Library and, just before the end of this meeting, a donation of $100 was presented to the library.

There being no further business, JoAnne moved that the meeting be adjourned, Kim seconded and it was passed.  The meeting was adjourned at 11:00am.

Respectfully submitted,

Jan S.

Secretary

Rusty's Ramblings…

By Rusty H.

Illinois State Ambassador

Hello Ladies!  Welcome to 2009!

I sincerely hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Unfortunately I was not able to wish you this before the holidays due to computer problems!  I am now working on my ole' PC, which means there is a monitor on my desk the size of my Ford truck.  The laptop is going to the shop tomorrow; I don't care what it costs.

Something new for me this year is that I am retiring from the other motorcycle organization that I belong to.  I have been a member of the Bi-State Motorcycle Awareness Council for around 17 years and this is my last year.  I tried cutting back on my duties and no one wanted to pick up the slack, so last year I gave my notice.  Told them I would finish my term as Treasurer and then I was leaving completely.  Many people think the Council will fold without me, but I doubt it.  It'll just be up to someone else to be a major player.  Come the end of May, I'll be free to spend more time on W.O.W. stuff.

Ok, so, first thing in the new year is working on ride schedules.  Last year I didn't put together an All State Schedule to send out mainly 'cus I didn't get schedules from all the Chapters.  I did my best in the Ramblings… to keep everyone posted on what was happening around the state, but I could only work with what I had.  Hopefully I'll get more info to me sooner and can get something put together before riding season gets going.  I know that all schedules are subject to change, but I can at least try.

As your Chapter's are working on schedules here are a few dates to keep in mind.  June 5-7th is the IL Allstate + Campout and it has been moved to a new location.  The hostess Chapter, the Northwind Riders, has chosen to move the event to Peoria instead of Springfield, IL. They have reserved a block of rooms at the Stoney Creek Inn in East Peoria and have camping information available for Spindler Campground and Marina.  If you haven't seen the flyer, let me know and I'll e-mail or snail mail a copy to you.  NWR had changed the name of this weekend to the Midwest Ride In, but National has requested that they change this to avoid confusion with the International Ride In held in July.  I'll let you know the new name when I know it.

The International Ride In will be in Kerrville, Texas and the dates are July 7-9th.  I won't be able to attend this year, but hope that Illinois can still make a good showing at the Roll Call during the banquet.  For more info go to www.womenonwheels.org, click on events and then on the 2009 Ride In.

Upcoming next month is the International Motorcycle Show in Chicago.  I have contacted the IL Chapter Directors about volunteers, so if you plan to work either the Women On Wheels® booth or the Women's Motorcyclist Foundation booth, get with your Chapter Director or myself.  The IMS is held at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL.  The dates are Feb 6-8th.  Anyone volunteering to work the booth will get free admission to the show, so volunteer for a couple hours and save some money from the admission.

There are lots more activities happening in IL and as I hear about them, I'll let you know.  If you know of something and want to share it, send me the info and I'll get it in the Rambling…

Guess this is about it for now.  Get to work on your schedules and give me something to write about!

Ride Safe,

Rusty
