Uncle Harry's at Airport Road No. 72
Look for the Uncle Harry's sign next to Thrifty Car Rental.
It was Friday November 30 and at Orient Beach that day a bunch of us decided to brave the traffic and head over to Uncle Harry's on the "Dutch" side. Mike called Harry's and made reservations for 13 at 7:00p. Our party of 13 included Mike & Susan Seitzinger, John & Rae Kimball, Steve & Maria Siguaw, Bill & Dorie Gedney, Dave & Darlene McAlonan, Ray & Vlasta Mann and Alan Hammond. Bill & Dorie were first timers to Uncle Harry's and Dave & Darlene returned after a five year hiatus. All of us except Steve & Maria were there on time, they showed up at 7:10 and blamed the Simpson Bay traffic. The rest of us lucked out by coming through the Lowlands. It took Ray, Vlasta, Dave & Darlene a leisurely 50 minutes from their apartment in Orient Bay Village.

  • Ordering the food was a no-brainer: eleven (11) grilled filet mignons, including one for Vlasta who's not too fond of red meat. We made it simple for Claudia, the young, attractive server: Alan, John, Rae, Steve, Dorie, Dave, Darlene and Ray each said medium with a side of baked potato, Vlasta said medium rare with a baked potato, Mike ordered his medium well with baked potato and Susan said in a southern drawl "well done... Texas style, butterflied and with a baked potato". Maria and Bill each ordered a 2˝ pound ($58.75) lobster. They looked tempting but the filets were just too good to pass up.
Ray just had to get a pic of our steaks on the grill. Juan Valdez was lovingly taking care of them, again. Juan (Ray finally asked him his real name...it's Alejandro) came all the way from the Dominican Republic to grill our steaks . The 6th year in a row.
The crisp looking mixed salad was served first (btw, Darlene's was deboned this time, unlike in 2002), together with a second round of drinks for some of us. Ray got another Carib before the steaks came. Ray's filet mignon was grilled perfectly to medium rare (?) but he still savored every bite. Did he get Vlasta's by mistake? Even so it was still a great steak. Ahhh, red meat! Muchas gracias, Alejandro!
Maria got her lobster when we got our steaks at just past 8:20. She said it was very good. Bill though didn't fare quite as well, he didn't get his lobster for another 15 minutes when most of us had already finished eating.
The service was not as good as in previous years for an obvious reason. Harry expanded the seating beyond the houseboat roof to 65 but did not add to his inexperienced and confused waitstaff. Following are just some of the annoying faux pas:
  • Darlene had to ask four (4) times for some ice cubes
  • Vlasta had to wait too long for her 2nd pineapple/malibu (Ray finally got fed up, cornered the waitress and asked for it)
  • Dave never not got a chance to ask for a 2nd Coors Light
  • Darlene's Amaretto was not on their bill
  • Susan had to wait more than 20 minutes for her 2nd Carib
  • Mike had only one coke but two showed up on their bill
  • Also, a 3rd filet showed up on Mike & Susan's bill (we know Mike likes steak but that was a bit much)
On the way back to our Orient Village apartment we rated the steaks and the service:
  • Darlene 8/10 for her steak & 1/10 for service
  • Dave 7/10 for his steak & 1/10 for service
  • Vlasta 10/10 for her steak & 1/10 for service
  • Ray 8/10 for his steak & 2/10 for service
When we asked Harry three years ago where he gets the filets he said he has them flown in from California. We got separate checks. Our total bill w/o gratuity came to $79 for 2 steak dinners ($59), 2 Carib ($6), two malibu/pineapple ($12), and an espresso ($2) for Vlasta. No free shots of Ma Doudou this time. Nobody had room for dessert except Alan. Claudia thanked him for his generous tip. We didn't get to see Harry this time but Ray grabbed a couple more of his unique biz card on the way out.
  • Uncle Harry's is open 7 days a week from 5:00p and starts serving dinner about an hour later till about 10:00p. Uncle Harry's also sells live lobsters.
Uncle Harry's will probably be on our Nov/Dec 2008 agenda.
