History of Mt. Rushmore

"America lives in the heart of everyman who wishes
to find a region where he will be free to work out
his destiny as he chooses."
-Woodrow Wilson

The four most famous guys in rock! South Dakota's Black Hills make the backdrop for Mount Rushmore, the world's greatest mountain carving. These 60-foot high faces, 500 feet up, look out over pine, spruce, birch, and aspen trees in the clear western air. Mount Rushmore memorializes the birth, growth, preservation and development of the United States of America. Between 1927 and 1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers carved the images of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, out of the granite rock, to represent the first 150 years of American history.
