DOG OBEDIENCE

The first session of the Spring Dog Obedience School will begin Aug. 28th, 2008.

The dates for the session will be Aug. 28th, Sept. 4th, 11th, 16th (NOTE this is a Tuesday) 25th and Oct. 2nd.

This Dog Obedience Class will be held for 6 weeks on the McDonough County 4-H grounds. We will meet for an hour(5:30 to 6:30pm) each week. You will be expected to work with your dog at home at least once a day for 15 minutes. Two or three 15 minute sessions a day would be optimal. DO NOT work your dog any more than 15 minutes at one time.

In this 6 week course you will be taught how to train your dog to perform all, but not limited to, the following commands on leash:
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Heel (walk at your side
  • Stay
  • Stand
  • Come when called

At the end of the 6 week course, your dog will not be fully trained, but have a stong foundation on which to base any training needed thoughout it's life.

Main Points to note:

  1. Your dog must have an active rabies, distemper/parvo and bordetella vaccination for your and your dog's protection as well as a courtesy to others. YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF THE RABIES CERTIFICATE AND PROOF OF DISTEMPER/PARVO VACCINES TO THE REGISTRATION FORM.
  2. A six foot leather lead is required for training sessions. NO chain leashes or flexi leads are NOT allowed.
  3. Gentle leader, Easy walk harness, buckle collars, choke chain and pinch collars can be used for training, with the first 2 being preferred
  4. All dogs must be on leash upon arrival on the grounds. No contact should be made with other dogs while on the grounds - this includes playing.
  5. The training classes will be held rain or shine. In the event the class needs to be cancelled due to weather, it will be announced on radio station K100
  6. We reserve the right to ask anyone with a dog of questionable personality to muzzle the dog--at the owner's expense.

Remember the four "P's" of obedience training -- Practice, Patience, Praise, and Perseverance.
