Welcome! Here is some general information I thought you might find useful. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me at home or school.
Nutrition Break Each day we will have a break sometime in the morning. The students may eat a healthy snack at this time.
Birthdays Your child may bring treats on his/her birthday. Please make sure to send enough for the whole class. If it is a messy treat, please send napkins, also. Thanks!
Book Orders Once a month I will be sending home book orders from several different clubs. I believe children need to read a variety of levels and materials, so they will vary greatly. If you are not interested, just throw them away. If you would like to order some books, you may send cash (in an envelope, please) or a check made out the individual book club.
Field Trip We will be taking various trips during the year, both bus and walking. If you are interested in going with us, please let me know.
DARE Your child will be participating in DARE this year. Information about when the class will be will come later.
Band Band is offered to students in fifth grade. However, please be informed that students in band DO miss out on studyhall on band days. This will happen twice a week.
Take Home Folder A folder containing your child's work for the week will be sent home on the last day of the week. It must be signed by a parent and returned to school on the first day of the next week.
Tests Tests will be sent home. Be sure to look for them after "test day".
Assignment Notebooks Assignment notebooks are to be filled out daily. Please check out your child's book often.
Spelling Spelling words will be sent home on the last day of the week for the following week. I will also try to keep them posted on the spelling web page. Practice tests are on the first day of the week, dictation sentences will be given on the last day.
Social Studies and Science I will try to let the kids know several days in advance of a test. I do my best not to schedule SS and Science tests on the same day. We will review the day before a test,
Science Experiments On the last day of each week 5 students will present experiments to the class. They will have a week to find an appropriate experiment. I will supply the books with the experiments in them; however, they may choose to use other resources. They must get their experiment approved by me.
Reading We will not be using a text book for reading. We will be using novels, picture books, and other forms of literature. We will be using the Accelerated Reader Program. In this program, the students read a book from a given list. They then take a test over the book on the classroom computer. Points are received for the test depending upon the accuracy of their answers and the difficulty of the book. Each month your child will be responsible for reading 10 points worth of AR books. (Students who are not in my Reading class may have different requirements.) Your child will have daily access to the lists of these books. Most of them can be found either in our classroom library or school library. They may also choose to check them out of the public library. If you would like to make a copy of the Accelerated Reader book list, please let me know. Your child may bring the list home to be copied; however, please realize it is about 100 pages long. Check out the reading page on this web site for titles we are currently reading.
Homework Assignments are due as per teacher instructions. Assignments turned in one day late will be marked down 10%. First quarter I will try to help the students remember in late work. After that, work that is over one day late will be a zero. This is an all school policy. If students apply themselves during the day, they will have minimal homework.

Web Page This web page is a very time consuming project for me. I will do my best to keep it updated and fun; however, from time to time I may experience technical difficulties, either mine or the computer's! I may also run into periods of time where I will not be able to keep up with it due to time constraints. Please be patient!
