History of Maple Park Public Library

In June of 1963, a group of citizens interested in establishing a library met to form the Maple Park Library Association, an incorporated non-profit group. Included in this group were Mrs. Julius Anderson, Mrs. Martin Strausberger, Mrs. Robert Newton, Mr. Robert Weston, Mr. Burdette Campbell, Dr. Edward Hannan and Miss Lou Darling.

On July 29th, an election was held for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a free public library and the election of board members. The referendum was passed and the six trustees elected were Mrs. Julius Anderson, Mrs. Martin Strausberger, Mrs. Donald Needham, Miss Nellie McCabe, Mr. Robert Pintozzi and Mr. William Creamean.

Since tax money was not available for one year, we were fortunate to have the support of several local organizations. Over $1,000 was donated by the Lions Club, American Legion, Mother’s Club, P.T.A., Teen Club and Ohio Grove Grange.

Mr. John Nottolini donated a building (currently the laudrymat) with one year’s free rent and heat, and the Village Board donated a card catalogue. Much time and labor were also given by the local citizens. We were fortunate to have the services of Miss Lou Darling, a retired school librarian who took the complete responsibility of organizing the library. She was assisted in this by Mrs. Maxine Sharp, the board members and the association.
