It is known that LANTERN in Italy is Lantiernaio meaning Lantern Maker or Tinsmith. It is known that surnames come from occupations. It is known that I can only find ONE family with a father Henry and son Joseph b. 1842, and mother with same surname, previous to census of 1850 had passed away after childbirth and it is known that the area they were found was the same area the family is said to have reigned. It is not the exact spelling of our known surname, but it is also fact that surnames were many times mispelled. BUT it is also known that the family I found with Henry, Joseph and Mary LANTON of Rutherford County TN was actually the LANTERN family as I have the will of the father of this Henry who names all his children and he died in Rutherford CO TN 1841. <P> It is quite awesome to imagine that my family were those of earlier settlers in America, perhaps from Italy or Portugal, Pirates, Spaniards, mixed with the blood of the Pilgrims who landed on this soil in the 1600's! Maybe I have an imagination, maybe not. <P>Also quite interesting to me is that Joseph and Edith, below, named their daughter Sophrano, their son Joseph obiviously after the forefathers, but Joseph's daughters were named Cecile and Madgelean. Cecile's sons named Eugene and Carlos, her daughters named Louise and Rosalie. He joined an all German Unit.He also enlisted under the alias of "Peter Kolb" for his fear was that of bushwhackers since he was coming back into the South where he was from to fight and he stated that he knew people in TN and surrounding states.<P>Apparently Lincoln announced a plan for another draft in August 1862, which would make each state responsibile for its own through a lottery system to fill and those not included in the Lottery would be drafted by that state. Since TN was part of the Confederacy, the men would be drafted or called to serve in the Confederacy. Here is probably the answer to my question as to why Joseph waited until August 1862 to even enlist and enlist in the Union, had he stayed he would have been a part of either the Lottery or the Draft system OF THE SOUTH that would have held him in the Confederate Army. Why living in the South, feeling so strongly to join the Union and only under the threat of being FORCED to join the Confederacy, did he make his move? I feel strongly he saw opportunity for himself, to travel so freely, which his light skin enabled him to do, (not sure about all of his other brothers but the family pics I've seen at this time, were mulatto some lighter than others and I've heard many of this line were light skinned)but if not a must for his family and their descendents who may have been darker skinned, perfect timing for himself, to risk his life, his security, even leaving the south to join in the Union Army passing as white. Risking it all for a NEW LIFE for himself, yet at the same time, fighting for his family. Even under an alias, he needs no condemnation for his actions but gratitude to help fight for his people as he could have stayed in the south and fought for the south, but he took a big step,risking his own life........ I did however, locate a Joseph Lawton/Laxton next door to a much older Lewis Lantern, also 2 doors down or across the farm was a Jesse SAXTON born 1798, Could this be Henry's brothers, Lewis and Jesse, mentioned in the will of Joseph LANTERN; the bdates are quite possibly the same as these<P>Joseph was never found in Rutherford County OR Williamson co TN in 1860. Could he have been in Jackson County TN all along. Also, there was mention of Joseph b. 1842 living in Jackson TN when he was young, on the pension affidavit from the civil war.<P>Joseph didn't join the union army until August 1862, Mustered in Sept 1862 Chicago, Oak County, IL. So where was he in 1860? I know he married on Dec. 9, 1865 in Nashville, TN according to pension records. No record of marriage exists he stated in pension, so this is all the proof of Joseph and Sarah Grimes marriage that I have and the fact that they were together until death. According to Muster Record, he was discharged June 9, 1865.
