Now here comes the fun part of the costumes: the underwears! Actually, it’s not the fun part at all. This can be kind of disgusting, but it’s stuff you need to know. If you are a young child, you may not want to read all this and just go with the other parts of the costume. And since this is the girls’ section of the extras for costuming, I really hope no males will be reading this, because they will certainly not enjoy it. But enough introduction. Let’s move on.

First of all, you’ll probably want your underwear to be flesh-colored. That way, if any of it does show through, it won’t be quite as embarrassing. People will just think it’s your skin. Secondly, you’ll probably want a body liner so that your skin does not show through.

As for the actual underwear, you’ll have some decisions to make. Let’s start with bras. Most unitards come with what you need already in the chest area, so a bra might not be necessary. But if you’re big-chested, or just feel uncomfortable, you can wear a sport bra or a dancer’s bra. I recommend a dance bra, but a sport bra is much easier to find.

Let’s go to the lower half of the underwear. The professional CATS performers wear thong underwear. There’s a good reason for that. If you go around in regular underwear and you dance in it, you’re bound to get your knickers in a twist (in other words, a wedgie). Then you’ll go around picking your bum, which does not look all that glamorous. Plus it might get a bit bunchy, and that doesn’t look glamorous either. However, if you get thong underwear, you’ll give up on the bum-picking thing because you’ll never get rid of your wedgie. See how that works? However, it will take some getting used to. Although I recommend the thong underwear, it is totally up to you.

Then there’s that time of the month, if you know what I mean. (Note to young children who do not know what I mean: Forget it. You’ll find out soon enough.) I recommend tampons. In fact, I think it would be totally stupid to use a pad, because they can be big and bulky and they might be a little obvious. Plus, if they’re not straight, it will leak right through and maybe stain your unitard. Find a tampon that works for you.

Well, I think that’s all. Remember to keep all this in mind when you’re creating your costume. And also remember that as much as I recommend certain things, this is entirely up to you. Make your own decisions and perform your own experiments.
