General Motors Electro-Motive Division

The Elctro-Motive Engineering Company was formed in 1922 in LaGrange, Illinois. It later bought the Winton Engine Company and was then called the Electro-Motive Corporation. In 1934, it built the revolutionary Burlington Zephyr, later renamed the Pioneer Zephyr. It is preserved at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. EMD was and still is the "World's Largest Locomotive Builder." EMD was later bought by General Motors and now is called General Motors Electro-Motive Division. During the 1940's and beyond, it pioneered the mainline diesel locomotive. GM-EMD's corporate headquarters, engineering facilities and parts-manufacturing operations are still located at the original site in LaGrange, Illinois. Final assembly is completed at the GM Diesel Division, EMD's state-of-the-art facilities in London, Ontario. From there, it's locomotives are shipped throughout the world.
