Wall Shield
Weapon

The shields in this picture range in age from 10 BC to AD 40.  The soldier on the far left front, is holding the shield that would more then likely be the wall shield used by the Republic of Iridine.  These shields were the first transformation of the scutum in hundreds of years.  While not as tall as the older long shield, these shields are wider and more curved, this means that overall the provide more protection, since when the soldier crouches down, his entire body will fit behind the shield.  These types of shields also allowed for the tortoise technique, which the soldiers pictured above are attempting.
The wall shield, is a recent addition to Iridine's armory.  It offers far more protection then the long shield, and also is much more sturdy, however the cost is astronomical.  It's the cost that has stopped them from becoming the chief shield of the legio, but as legio troopers must supply their own equipment it's predicted that these shields will eventually replace the older long shield.  Until the cost comes down, however, I don't see this happening.
