In general the robe tends to be a sign of the priesthood more then anything else.  Most priests wear robes, from the plain drab robes of the acolyte, to the fancy decorative robes of the high priest.  The robe affords some minor weapon protection (about as much as most clothing), but it's key advantage is it's thick construction keeps the wearer warm in even the coldest temperatures.  Because of this Iridines lower class head counts often wear them during colder months as they are more cost effective then buying a cloak.
