The pilum, next to the gladius, is the weapon that won Rome the greatest empire in history.  This weapon developed out of a need by the Romans to soften up celtic charges.  They originally turned to the traditional javelin, however this weapon, failing to hit it's target, was to often turned back against the Romans.  The solution was the gradual invention of the pilum.  The pilum has a socketed iron head, however it is made of soft iron that will easily bend once it hits it's intended target.  While it can be bent back into shape, it requires far to much time to do so on an open battlefield.  One added benefit of this soft iron head, was that should it strike an enemies shield, the pilum would embed itself into the shield, and then bend down, making it impossible to get it out, and depriving a foe of his shield.  Never forget however, that the pilum was intended to kill, and kill it did.
  The Aestivan's pride themselves in their spears, and phalanx, Iridine prides herself in her legions, and their pilums.  Pilums have one the Iridines battles from as far north as the Tuchean war, to the more recent, and far nearer, conflicts with Aestivia.  All legionars should learn to use this weapon soon after enrolling into the legions of Iridine.
