Long Shield
Weapon

The Roman legionary shield was known as the 'scutum'.  The long shield we see above is what it looked like in it's earliest form, from about the 7th century BC, until roughly 10 BC.  By the time of the Roman Empire, the legions had developed a slightly shorter, but much wider shield that covered the majority of the body, that replaced this earlier long shield.  As a side note, the soldier pictured above is an excellent example of a late Republic trooper.
Up until a few months ago, these shields were without a doubt the primary shield of Iridine's legio.  That all changed, however, with the introduction of the wall shield, the only thing that keeps the legio from currently switching to the wall shield is the expense.  Long shields are by far cheaper then the wall shield, and provide very good protection.  In my opinion, unless your pockets are overflowing, stick with the long shield over the wall shield.
