Short thrusting sword of the Romans, the blade of the gladius ranged from
16-22'' long. The blade was a of the double edged type, made standard across
Europe at this time. The hilt of the gladius was typically made of wood,
bone, or ivory. Developed originally in bronze but more effective in the
later iron examples. Designed both for thrusting and for cutting in close-in
combat. This is the sword, combined of course with their discipline and
shields, that one almost all the known world for the Romans. Due to it's
small size in comparison with other blades the Roman gladius was never truly
intended to fight without a shield.
The gladius has been the traditional weapon of the Republic of Iridine
for over a thousand years. It finds it's basis in earlier Cineran
swords. A very effective one handed sword, the gladius comes in a
myriad of styles and materials. The gladius will do anything from
cuts to punctures depending on the material it is made from and the skill
of it's user.
