More Data on Energy Generation Industry in Illinois
ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION gives the following numbers
in the Inventory of Electric Utility Power Plants in the US in 1999:
Number of existing units in Illinois: 328 with total nameplate
capacity: 33,620 MW. Among these there are 56
coal-burning units with capacity of 15,901 MW, 119 petroleum-burning
units with capacity of 1,946 MW and 130 gas units totalling
4,220MW. Eleven nuclear plants add 11,538 MW.
From the same source:
planned (net) capacity additions for Illinois
for period between 1999 and 2003 are for 29 plants of total generator nameplate
capacity 2,072 MW.
ComEd, serving 70% of Illinois customers, reported peak demand
for electricity of 21,140 MW in summer of 1999.
ILLINOIS COMMERCE COMMISSION released an "Assessment of Competition
in the Illinois Electric Industry Three Months Following the
Initiation of Restructuring" in January 2000.
The ICC documents following changes in the energy generation field:
Total capacity additions in 1999: 1,146 MW.
Capacity additions of proposed new power plants in Illinois:
In year 2000: 2,547 MW
In year 2001: 2,237 MW
Year 2002-2004: over 4,000 MW

the Assessment lists 24 new plants that either commenced
or will begin operation in the near future (plant size,date,developer,
and the location of the site are given).
As of February 2000 there are not 24 but 43 permit applications
submitted by various electric companies to the ILLINOIS ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION AGENCY totalling more than 16,000 MW of new
generation capacity proposed for Illinois.
