Rumors

FF7 is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. And even now, two years after its release, there are STILL rumors flying around about it!! I'll tell you these rumors, what supports them, what contradicts them, and my own personal thoughts.

Can Aeris be ressurected?
Ahh yes, the most popular rumor of all. Awhile ago, before FF7 was released on US Shores, a man named Ben Lansing, who claimed to be a former employee for Square, said that there was an Aeris (who was Aerith in the Japanese version) Resurrection process, but it was cut at the last minute because of time. Here is the process:

What Supports This Rumor: Like all the party memmbers, with the exception of Cait Sith, Aeris has a Level 4 Limit Break. Usually, people don't even get Cloud's Level 4 Limit Break until Disc 2, so how could you get Aeris' in Disc 1? Also, after the battle with Jenova-SYNTHESIS and after you make your three teams, each character stands on a block. There is one open block, possibly for Aeris...?

What Contradicts This Rumor: You can't get the key to Midgar in Disc 1. Lansing said that this was because the game was rushed. But even with a Game Shark for all the Key Items, you can't reenter Midgar. I know, I've tried. Also, the Underwater Breath Materia could only be gotten with a Game Shark in the Japanese version, but in the US version, it's been made into a useable Materia. However, it's not used to resurrect Aeris, but to eliminate the 20 minute time limit when fighting Emerald WEAPON in the ocean. And if you did return to the church in Disc 2, in the Japanese version, you would see something involving Aeris, but it was just Cloud remembering her. And the man in the tunnel was a Sephiroth-clone. When you first see him in Disc 1 after you meet Aeris, Aeris says that he has a tattoo of the number 2. There is one other important little piece of information that contradicts this rumor: Lansing himself claimed that he made the whole thing up to just see if people believed him.

My Thoughts: Aeris is dead, you can't bring her back. But if you really want her in your party again, use my Game Shark code. However, she won't play any part in the story after this. Does this mean that Square never meant to resurrect her? Not at all. It simply means that they probably dismissed the idea.

Are there any alternate endings?
This is another popular rumor. Lansing claimed that if you resurrected Aeris successfully, then you would have an alternate ending. And when Square announced that there was a new CG movie added, everyone thought it was the alternate ending, but in fact it was only a clip of the WEAPONs emerging from the Crater. However, Yuffie and Vincent are nowhere to be seen in the ending, even if you did find them. And the current ending leaves much to the imagination, without ever really explaining what happens to the characters afterwards.

What Supports This Rumor: There was originally alternate endings planned for the game which included Yuffie or Vincent or both. And with all the different things you can do, such as being kind to Tifa, being kind to Aeris, or being mean to both of them, you would expect it would have some sort of effect on the ending.

What Contradicts This Rumor: The fact that there isn't enough room on the third disc for any more endings. Square has stated that in order for there to be more than one ending, there would need to be a whole other disc included and it would cause the movie to go slower. Plus, I have played through FF7 about 20 times, each time trying to do things differently. The ending is always the same. Also, if there were extra endings including the secret characters, the would also have been added to the movie of the team on the Highwind when the WEAPONs escape.

My Thoughts: What you see is what you get. While Square did plan to have alternate endings, they had nothing to do with Aeris' resurrection and they only included Yuffie or Vincent or both of them with the rest of the team. And while a lot of us would have loved to see Yuffie and Vincent in a CG style, it looks like it'll never happen.

Is there a Sephiroth-clone secret character?
In a nutshell, no. There are rumors flying all around the place about how to get a Sephiroth-clone, but not one of them is the truth. I, myself, posted a process in which a Sephiroth-clone could join your party (see secret characters). The reason I did that was to prove to you that ANYONE with knowledge of the game and the items can make up a process to find a secret character.

What Supports This Rumor: Well, you CAN win an exact copy of the Masamune Blade (Sephiroth's sword) in the Gold Saucer, so what are you supposed to do with that? It's not an equippable weapon on any of your characters, so perhaps it could be used for a Sephiroth-clone? And we mustn't rule out the fact that the 1/35 SOLDIER has no use either. And if you put all of your characters in the inactive party after Aeris dies, there's still two slots open, one of which is meant for Cloud, but Cloud can never be taken out of the active party.

What Contradicts This Rumor: The fact that there are more items than the Masamune and 1/35 SOLDIER that have no use. Such as the Super Sweeper, the Tissue, and the Autograph. Are these used to get a Sephiroth-clone as well? Also, take a look at the 1/35 SOLDIER when you find it in Junon. It looks like a miniature commander. So what is the 1/35 SOLDIER? AN ACTION FIGURE!!!!

My Thoughts: Sephiroth is my favorite character in the game, but you can never control him. The only time he's in your party is during Cloud's flashback, and even then he's controlled by the computer. While you can use a Game Shark for Sephiroth, he's still controlled by the computer and you can't enter a conversation with him or the game will glitch. Also, if you try to use him in a battle in Disc 2 or 3, his HP will steadily drop until it reaches 0, but you can't resurrect or cure him. And while there may be some process to get a Sephiroth-clone, I haven't found it.

Is Zack a playable character?
Here's another rumor I've heard a lot about. I've even been to a webpage where someone claimed he actually succeeded in getting Zack to join his party (go to secret characters to read it). I've tried doing this on the PlayStation version of FF7, but it didn't work. I have no idea if it works on the Japanese version or not, but I have recently heard a rumor that it may only work on the PC version of FF7.

What Supports This Rumor: As I said before, after Aeris dies, there are two open slots in the inactive party in the PHS menu. Perhaps one of these is for Zack? Also, there are two character icons which are just Japanese kana which spell out 'Now Printing.' Perhaps these icons were meant to be character icons, but the portraits were never drawn. One of these portraits could have been for Zack.

What Contradicts This Rumor: True, one of those slots could be for Zack, but why would Square only make him playable on the PC version? Practically everyone who has played FF7 has it for the PSX. There is also no Game Shark code to put Zack in your party. Also, Zack was killed by Shin-Ra troops outside of Midgar.

My Thoughts: Zack is dead, get over it. And even if he were playable, why would you want him? He already looks exactly like Cloud except for a different hairstyle. Their attacks are also probably exactly the same. If you want to play as Zack in FF7, my advice is to name Cloud Zack and use a Game Shark code for Cloud. Also, Zack is a secret character in the fighting game Ehrgeiz, so you can play as him in that as well.

Is Young Cloud a playable character?
Only in the flashback.

What Supports This Rumor: Nothing.

What Contradicts This Rumor: He's Young Cloud!! Why would a Cloud from the past come into the future? And Cloud was never in SOLDIER anyway.

My Thoughts: Even if Young Cloud WAS a playable character, why would you want him? He's far weaker than Cloud and only at like Level 1. But if you really want him, use a Game Shark.

Is there a secret character named 'Baakusa'?
Ahh, Baakusa. Baakusa (or Boxer) was the name given to the Goblins on the Northeast Island because of their Goblin Punch attack and their appearence. It's rumored that Baakusa is a secret character, but was cut at the last minute.

What Supports This Rumor: The infamous "two free slots in the inactive party" excuse, plus the second 'Now Printing' character icon.

What Contradicts This Rumor: The fact that there is no Game Shark code to access Baakusa and therefore, he was never in the game.

My Thoughts: Baakusa may have been intended to be a secret character, as was Zack, but was cut at the last minute. Also, there are two open slots in the inactive menu, but only one free stone block when you face off against Sephiroth in the Crater. Therefore, there could only be one secret character, or perhaps the second block just wasn't finished. But even if it were, that would mean that one character would be in a party all on his own, unless one of the secret characters died before the Crater incident.

Does Tifa do a ten-minute strip show at the end of the game if you input a series of buttons?
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! This is one of the dumbest rumors I have ever heard!! It's said that if you input a series of buttons when the credits are rolling over and over, Tifa will do a ten-minute strip show after the FF7 logo comes up.

What Supports This Rumor: Not a damn thing.

What Contradicts This Rumor: It's more like what doesn't contradict this rumor!!

My Thoughts: It's all a lie. Sorry guys, but it looks like the only way you're gonna see Tifa in her birthday suit is on one of those hentai sites. And no, I don't have the links.

Can you date Barret?
Yes.

What Supports This Rumor: The fact that you can actually date him.

What Contradicts This Rumor: Nothing.

My Thoughts: It can be done. I've spoken to people in Japan who have done this.
