Civil Rights Violations InWVHS

Ms. Wiesemes's English Class

Student Records Being Accessed By Non School-Personel

It has come to my attention that the student records of every student attending classes taught by Ms. Wiesemes are being viewed by at least one unauthorized person. This student, named Sherman, has access to all grades and has entered grades into the “Making The Grade” database which stores all grades. Also, Sherman has entered grades into the database. I have personally seen Sherman alone at Ms. Wiesemes’s computer and logged into the “Making The Grade” program. When I attempted to get more information from Ms. Wiesemes, she told me to talk to my lawyer. Instead of spending money on a lawyer I contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. I learned that what Ms. Wiesemes is doing violates the Federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act(20 U.S.C. section 1232g.) and the Illinois School Student Records Act (105 ILCS 10/1.)
A school student record is any writing or other recorded information maintained by a school which concerns a student and by which the student might be affected. Grades are certainly a part of our student records. The only people in school who can access your student records are school personnel who have a current educational interest in you; persons who have obtained a court order; people who have received the prior specific written consent of your parents; and persons designated by state or federal law. Sherman is none of those. You may be asking yourself, “What can I do?” You should inform your parents of the violations of state and federal law that are occurring in English class. Also, by asking Ms. Wiesemes about this incident we can work together and straighten things out with Ms. Wiesemes. This is not the first violation of student rights that has occurred at Waubonsie Valley High School. With your help we can make it the last. For more information on the rights you have in and out of school contact the American Civil Liberties Union at (312) 201-9740 or if you have access to the internet https://www.angelfire.com/il/wvrights. Our rights are our power, by utilizing them and organizing against teachers who violate our rights, we can make a difference.
