Walt Whitman wrote: “Future years will never know the seething hell and the black infernal background, the countless minor scenes and interiors of the secession war; and it is best they should not. The real war will never get in the books.”

Now, to an author like myself who eats, drinks, breathes, and thinks Civil War history—some have said I’m obsessed, and rightly so—Whitman’s statement is a challenge. Whether I successfully triumph or miserably fail, however, is anyone’s guess. But I’m trying Walt, believe me, I’m trying...
