First Encounter with a Quail
The majestic fowl, head-raised and tail-erect, pompous plummage shining golden, stands proudly in the freshly-fallen powdery whiteness.
After much deliberation, the stillness is broken with that first fateful step from the pristine blanket of white to the well-trodden grimy-grey sludge.
Foolish fowl, out of the corner of my eye I glimpse the dark sillouette purposefully impeding my path.
Knee locks, foot breaks, tires spin, tail swerves, losing control until back in the grooves, tail straightens, tires grab hold, foot eases, knee slackens, I drive on into the void.
In the rearview mirror stands the solemn creature, visibly shaken, head held high in alarm, unaware of its existance in the powdery whiteness, rose-tinted from the setting sun.
