Composition 1

Chose one option from the prompts below and develop a very specific, argumentative thesis about it. You will need to write approximately 4-5 pages in which you fully elaborate on this issue using the rhetorical strategies we have been discussing in class. I will be looking for:

--a clear and specific thesis statement

--some address of possible opposition

--a logical argument, supported by facts and/or examples

1.) Langdon Winner argues in "Mythinformation" that many individuals who believe that technology can benefit our society also believe that computers support the elements of the following formula: information = knowledge = power = democracy. In your own words, explain why the formula might be false, why it might not yield the expected results, why computers might not support an enhanced democracy.

2.) Engage yourself in a "dialogue" with one of the essays/articles we have read in class that you find unrealistic or completely false. Construct a counter argument to the argument of the essay that you chose. You will need to present the argument of the essay as though your audience had never read it and then argue against the claims by providing counter-examples and other evidence.

3.) Find an advertisement or TV commercial that seems to make some sort of claim about the future of the Internet. Construct an argument in which you use a careful and complete analysis of the advertisement to support what you claim it is attempting to convey to its audience. You will need to describe and analyze both the text and the image components of the ad. Consider audience, and offer some possible critique of the ad's "message."

Be sure to provide a xerox copy of any print ads along with your final composition.
