CIS 158 Course Description



CIS 158 (Beginning Internet) is a class offered through Richard J. Daley College. The class meets for sixteen weeks on Saturday from 11:30a.m. to 2:20p.m. The course description involves learning to use e-mail, listserv, UseNet, telenet, interactive chat and. The cours also describes working on websites and communicating your ideas with others.

The textbooks used are as follows:

  1. Internet Literacy, Fred T. Hofstetter
  2. Creating Web Pages with HTML, Patrick Carey

There are also two websites available; http://www.mhhe.com/cit/hofstetter3 (Student Resources) and http://www.udel.edu/interlit/contents.html (InterLit website) which provide helpful learning resourses if needed.



The information used from Internet Literacy will help you understand the Internet as its technology is being used world wide. Some features covered in the book are:

  2. electronic mail
  3. videoconferencing
  4. ISP (Internet Service Provider)

The information used from Creating Web Pages with HTML helps you understand the meaning of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and how it is used to build web pages. Web pages can contain:

  1. Hyperlinks
  2. Images
  3. e-mail addresses
  4. GIF, animated GIF and JPEG files
