THE TURKISK SACK

On June 1, 1570 the begining of the worst had arrived. The blood thirsty ottoman turks invaded. 25000 Cypriots slaughtered, 2000 sold as slaves, 1000 young girls sent to the sultan as gifts. Many revolts followed, and in 1601 help was promised by the Venetians and the Brits but a deal was made between the turks and the two forces and the Cypriots paid dearly again. 1609, 1632, ....17....18.... On June 10 1810 Bishops and Archbishops of the Orthodox Church were hanged at the town's square. The next four days saw immense "Cypriot" human slaughter. In 1827 more of the same. 1833 saw three revolts but without long standing results. In 1878 the Brits arrived with imperial visions only to find the island in its worst historical condition.
