2001: A Space Odessey

2001: A Space Odessey

Stanely Kubrick directed this one. This movie was made in 1968 and was based on a short science fiction story. If I had to sum this up in one word it would be "brilliant." The cinematography is the star of the movie. This movie is gorgeous. The music and the images you see convey most of the feeling. Dialog in this movie is almost secondary. The first words are spoken 25 minutes into the film. The words that are spoken are sparse, but vital. Kubrick was trying to reach people on an inner level. It works. Even though this movie was made in the 60's, the effects still amaze me. I think Kubrick himself described this film the best:

"I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophical content...I intended the film to be an intensely subjective experience that reaches the viewer at an inner level of consciousness, just as music does... You're free to speculate as you wish about the philosophical and allegorical meaning of the film."
