There are other options such as In-Vitro fertilization. In-Vitro fertilization is a process of removing the biological mother's egg and fertilizing it in a Petri dish. After they start to develop, the eggs are put back into the uterus (Lemonick, 42). Another option is artificial insemination. That occurs when sperm is injected into an egg in a woman's body (Lemonick, 42). If the infertility problem is the males, a different person's sperm can be used.

The next two methods are pretty complicated. Not in procedure, but in ethics. Both of these methods involve a third party. The first method is an egg donor. This requires a woman to give her egg. The egg is harvested out of her uterus and fertilized in a Petri dish. After they start to develop, they are put into the mother's uterus. This is very similar to in-vitro fertilization, except that it involves another person besides the parents. (Lemonick, 42) This method is used if the woman is incapable of conceiving but can carry a baby to term. A problem arises, however, with the leftover eggs. See, not all the eggs are used. There are a few options. The eggs frozen and saved for later use. But what happens if the mother dies or if she does not want to use the eggs. Would throwing them out mean abortion?

So it is obvious that there are other options. If, however, those options will not work for a couple, there is still a way to reduce the risk of multiple births. It is possible to tell how many eggs are in the uterus. Then it is the couple's choice to inseminate or not. (McCormick and Kantrowitz, 61) So, there is a way to stop the huge multiple births. According to George Annas, "The body can safely hold up to three fetuses, no more." (104) If there are more than three eggs that made it to the uterus, the woman can choose to abstain from sex until they are shed in menstruation. A more drastic approach is to have a selective reduction. That is when the parents chose to abort some of the weaker fetuses. This has been compared to abortion which has it's own societal debate behind it. But nonetheless, it is an option to be considered. The one difference between abortion and selective fetal reductions is that the former is to end an unwanted pregnancy and the later is to promote healthy children or at least get one child out of several. The parents want so badly to have a child, that they are willing to sacrifice some of them. HOME!
