Why Fertility Drugs Cause Multiple Births

HOME!

One must first know how a child is conceived. In the beginning of the menstrual cycle, the estrogen and progesterone level drops, which causes the body to release the hormones GRF, FSH, AND LH (Cowely and Springen 66). After this happens, the follicles in the ovaries start to swell for about a week. During this time, the egg shoots estrogen into the woman's system. That estrogen stops the growth of more follicles and therefore, the production of more eggs. Then finally the egg is released into the fallopian tube to hopefully get fertilized (Cowley and Springen, 66). Fertility drugs can alter all of that. What fertility drugs, like Metrodin or Pergonal, do is allow the body to produce up to 40 eggs at a time. The ovaries can swell up to 10 times its normal size (Cowely and Springen, 66). The difference is about the same as between the size of a marble and softball.
