During winter of 2000, we found two male Mallards wandering around the supermarket parking lot. A snow plow had dumped about twelve feet of snow in their pathway to the pond. The two ducks were unable to find their way back and became "prisoners" of the lot, so I named them Jake and Elwood (because they reminded me of the Blues Brothers).Jake and Elwood became separated briefly in 2001, possibly due to an animal attack. Jake was missing feathers around his eye, appeared confused, and wandered aimlessly around the parking lot. Elwood reappeared a week later; the two are now inseparable.
