what the rest of the world needs to know:
Why is it that people act as if nothing besides the City exists in New York?
Granted, it is the epicenter of the cultural, financial and most other universes,
but for goodness sakes, there is life after the 125th Street Station!
If you don’t believe that, just read on. I'll be relating some information about
the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. If I have enough energy, I'll start in on the
city.
about the valley and the catskills
One of the most beautiful areas in the northeast, it’s beauty is somewhat hidden to the commoner. The
joys and wonders of the valley must be sought after, like the pearl of great price. The casual Thruway
traveller will not find his or herself strolling up the streets of Huguenot Village, dining in a pleasant
streamside cafe, browsing in a backstreet used book shop, or drinking heavenly espresso on the
sidewalk of a busy shopping street. The casual traveller up Route 28 will undoubtedly be wowed by the
beauty of the surrounding mountains, but will they find the quaint main street of Phoenicia? The
more daring, alternative locale of Margaretville? The unparalleled view obtained from the bridge
over the Ashokan Resevoir? How about the growing, vibrant Rondout neighborhood in Kingston?
In the maze of highway travel plazas, car dealerships and Ramada Inns, however, one can search, and
find, some of the most charming towns and backroads in the region, and dare I say, one of the most
cosmopolitan rural areas in the world. Where else but the Valley, will you drive through the rural back
woods, and discover art galleries in barns, vegetarian restaurants in strip malls, holistic healers to
sink a ship, sculpture parks in farmfields, and buddhist monasteries on mountaintops? I dare you. Go.
Search. And when you’ve given up, come back here, shut up, listen, and I’ll tell you everything I
know.

Another note: much of what I know is due to the passion instilled in us by one of my grade school teachers, Stephen King. (that’s not a joke - it’s his real name.) A resident of Platte Clove, New York, (oh! the beauty!) Stephen did his darndest to show us everything that the area had to offer, much of which have since become some of my favorite pieces of country. He did drag us up every mountain in the Catskill range however, and it’s taken years for me to forgive him. Read on.
