"The Descendants of James Veitch, the Sheriffe, and Johann Kemper, who Served in the American Civil War."

NOTICE: I will be updating this information and redesigning the website as soon as possible. The new website will include information from the Rev. War to the Spanish-American War, as well as including several surnames that I have found in my research.

"We Always Extend Our Fame By Our Deeds." Veitch Family Motto

The American Civil War was a conlfict between Northern and Southern citizens brought about by sharp differences on political and economic issues between the two sections.
The actual causes of the war extended far back in the history of the Republic and resulted from an accentuation of sectional grievances not resolved in nearly half a century of negotiation.
The two major issues that brought on the war were the fight over state rights, which involved the right of secession from the Union of the states under the Constitution, and the extension of slavery to new states and territories.
When the war began, the descendants of James Veitch, the Sheriffe, and John Kemper were already spread throughout both the Northern and Southern sections. The men fought for both the Union and the Confederacy, and these family members fought directly against one another in battles such as Shiloh, Fredricksburg, Antietam, Gettysburg, Atlanta, and many other fields of fire throughout the war. They served in the infantry, cavalry, artillery, navy, and, interestingly enough, I have found several Veaches and Kempers in the colored ranks of the Union army.
In this study, I have included as much information concerning each soldier as possible on my part. Without a doubt, the descendants of these men have much more information. I welcome anyone with such information to write to me, so I may include it here.
Nearly all the men included can be found in the three volumes of the 4V history books, We Veitches, Veatches, Veaches, Veeches. An Historical Treasury of the Descendants of James Veitch, the Sheriffe. For those interested, these books may be obtained by writing the following individuals:

Volume 1- Stanley Clark, 6060 W. Coyote, Redmond, OR., 97756.

Volumes 2 & 3- Robert Veech, VHS Treasurer, 4340 Olde Pine Ln., Jacksonville, FL., 32217.

Other books which were extremely helpful in creating this site were the Genealogy of the Kemper Family in the United States, Descendants of John Kemper of Virginia, which was published in 1899, and the Mellett and Hickman Families of Henry County, Indiana, published in a 2 volume set in 1974.

Also included in this work are the Van Houtens and Vanhoutens. At this time, the lineage of the Van Houten/Vanhouten name is cloudy. Those close to this writer have yet to trace the line back further than my great grandfather, Bert Van Houten. If any of the names herein are familiar with anyone, please feel free to contact me.

Surnames included in this work are the following:

Adams, Bates, Beabout, Bentley, Corrington, Cox, Dearinger, Dobson, Enlow, Fike, Grove, Guthrie, Harris, Hewes, Ice, Jones, King, Light, Mellett, Moore, Morgan, Mosby, Onion, Peyton, Randall, Rittenhouse, Sheridan, Shields, Sonneron, Spangler, Spayd, Sturm, Welborn, and VanHouten.
