Interview with Quorthon

S.O.D. Issue #8

Let's start at the beginning, tell us how you first got interested in music.I was nine years old and a friend's father bought a couple of records for him in New York City. We were listening to one of the records through a mono speaker and out of it came a guitar sound from "Cold Gin", the album was the first Kiss album from January 1975. That was when I said "I want to do that".

Tell us about where you're from and what it's like living in Sweden.

I was born in Stockholm and have lived there all my life. It is a mixture of Berlin and Paris and is built on 1,600 islands, so you can imagine the amount of water and bridges throughout Stockholm. I would recommend that everyone pay a visit to our beautiful city, especially in the summer.

After you heard your first Kiss album, did you attempt to get more music and try to learn more about it?

Kiss was the only band that I listened to for a couple of years, but I also like Sweet and Mountain. Alice Cooper was for the big guys, the eleven and twelve-year-olds, and the girls were into Bay City Rollers and David Cassidy.

So you really were into the guitars a lot?

Yes, that is a strange thing. I started playing drums at age nine and didn't pick up a guitar until I was fourteen or fifteen, so it was always the drums for me as far as playing but it was guitar-based music that i really enjoyed, like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. That all changed when I first heard Motorhead becuase they had a completely different rhythm.
