CCHS HALLOWEEN

Happy Halloween from CCHS

Halloween can be a time of fun and fantasy for youngsters, but a nightmare for pets if extra precautions aren't taken for their safety. Here are some tricks to help make the holiday a treat for your companion animals.

Cloister your kitty. Keep cats and shy pets in a separate part of your house or apartment during the hours that trick-or-treaters visit. Pets may be frightened by people in elaborate costumes. Also, a cat or small dog can slip outside unnoticed if you're not careful.

One person's candy may be your pet's poison. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it, and other candy, out of their reach. And remember: Pets can choke on candy wrappers, and cats in particular like to chew on cellophane, which can cause internal blockages.

Lights out. Some animals, like cats, are enchanted by flame. If you have a jack-o-lantern with a candle inside, make sure your pet can't get to it, minimizing the chances that he or she will knock it over or get burned.

Round 'em up. During the hours that trick-or-treaters roam, make sure your pets are safe inside, well protected from pranksters. Be particularly careful if you own a black cat, and make sure your midnight beauty doesn't become a target for overzealous revelers or cult followers.

Playing dress up. If you feel you must costume your critter for the holiday, make sure that the outfit is comfortable for the animal. It should allow your pet to move freely and should not block his vision or sight lines in any way. Try the costume out on your pet before the big night, to get him used to the feel of it and ensure that he is comfortable.
