A son, John Davis was born on the 9th day of March, 1889 at Egin, Idaho and the youngest son David Rosser was born on the 25th day of October, 1892 at Egin, Idaho. In 1870 my Great Grandfather Ephraiam Wills Jenkins and my Great Grandmother Catherine Davis with their oldest daughter Elizabeth sailed to America. On their voyage their daughter became very ill and the ship's doctor pronounced her dead, but my Great Grandmother said she knew that her small child was still alive because when a mirror was held in front of her mouth it would show traces of moisture. The parents held out hopes and through faith and prayers their daughter was spared. She lived a normal life in Odgen, Utah until she passed away at the age of 21. She never married. How grateful my Great Granparents were to have had their beautiful daughter spared from a grave at sea and the pleasure of having her share her many years after such an ordeal. The second daughter, my grandmother, was also on the voyage as Great Grandmother was pregnant with her at the time. My mother's history on which this is based said, " I have heard mother relate to me many times this wonderful blessing which her parents had received their faith and prayers". Grandmother was born at Ogden on the 21st day of October 1872. She met and Married my Grandfather, John Edward Mason, son of James Horby Mason and Clara Eardley. He was born at Croydin, Morgan Country, Utah on the 8th day of October, 1858. My Grandmother was the mother of 10 children.
My Great Grandparents struggled very hard to try and provide for their children while living in Ogden and tried many different ways to make a living for their family. Education was one thing that was very meager in 1883 so they moved their family to Egin, Idaho and living on a farm most of their lives raised their family here. My mother says in her history that she felt very lucky living so close to them from a very early age. How she enjoyed going to visit them. They were so warm and loving and Great Grandfather was a great fisherman who supplied his family with the choice trout from the cold waters of the Snake River, which wound it's way through St. Anthony, Idaho, which was about 8 miles from Egin. Great Grandmother was a wonderful cook and her grandchildren loved to go to home for a good fish dinner, or just a slice of her homemade bread. She would spread her homemade butter and plum jam on the loaf before she cut the slices off. The children enjoyed this so much and thought it made the eating much better. Both of my Great Grandparents were rather short in stature and I remember my mother telling me that they had to cut the legs off of the chairs so that my Great Grandfather could put his feet on the floor at the table. She said he was a very meticulous eater and that he could line his peas, or beans on a knife and never lose one. He always saw that the children had something to eat before going home. As soon as they had eaten he said, "Now you may go home." He was a wonderful father and Grandfather and he was loved by everyone who knew him.
Great Grandmother Jenkins was a very lovely person holding many positions in the church. Having a very beautiful contralto voice, she was able to participate in many activities.
Great Grandfather was saddened very much when his father and mother passed away, just three days apart. A joint funeral was held for them. The were buried in the Parker, Fremont county, Idaho cemetery. There graves were the first graves in this cemetery.
My mother's history of my Great parents relates an experience they had while visiting their grandparents dry farm. She said that there were many rattlesnakes there. Her grandmother gave her a pitcher and told her to go to the cellar where they kept the milk, cream, and butter to get some mild for her. When they got in the cellar they saw a snake drinking the milk out of the pan. It was a terrifying experience for them. She said, "Grandfather quickly took care of Mr. Snake!"
Grandfather and Grandmother Jenkins, in their latter years, moved from the farm to St. Anthony, Idaho, again living next door to my grandmother and grandfather and their family who many times helped with the chores in their grandparents garden, with their housework, and running errands for them.
Great Grandmother passed away on the 25th day of September, 1924. 9 years before I was born. She was 73 years old. My mother and the rest of her grandchildren sang at her funeral. My mother had a wonderful voice and she and her sister Ariel used to sing together and harmonize in a most beautiful way. They sang on many different occasions. I remember especially them singing, "Rocking Alone In An Old Rocking Chair". I can still to this day hear them singing this. My mother said, "life after her passing was never the same as we missed her very much. Grandfather was at our home very often spending the remainder of his life with his children."
Great tragedy came to him when he lost his wife and sons so close together. The one son who lived with him, as he never married, was a great comfort to him. After Great grandmother passed away and he felt very lonely without him as all his other children were married. He passed away the 6th day of January, 1930 at the age of 80 years and was laid to rest in the Parker Cemetery beside his parents and his wife who preceded him in death. He was greatly missed by his family, neighbors, and many friends…I only regret so very much that I had not known either of my great grandparents. My grandmother, their daughter was wonderful to me. I spent my early youth from the day I was born in her home daily. She taught me so much and I loved her dearly. I was only 5 when she died. I remember one time when I was very young. She called me out side and said, pointing up, "Look Shirley there is an airplane." This was quite a novelty at this time. I remember feeling completely at awe with this. She also had a way of keeping me away from a canal that ran behind her home. It was swift and dangerous and my grandmother was always afraid I might drown here. She told me that there were alligators in the canal. I believed her and I really wasn't going to go near them.
When I was quite young I had a lot of bad leg aches. They used to call them "growing pains" but I am sure that it was possibly due to slight rheumatic fever. Many times this was misdiagnosed in the 1930s. Grandmother would wrap my legs in warm towels and tuck me into bed. This always seemed to help. I remember sitting on the arm of her old rocking chair with her while she rocked for what seemed a very long time listening to the "tick-tock" of her old grandfather's clock. I can still visualize this today. I loved my grandmother very, very much. I truly believe that this where my own mother learned her gentleness and warmth. And my own grandmother learned this from her own mother. According to my mother she was very kind and gentle too.
Most of this history was taken directly from my Mother's History of Ephraim Wills Jenkins. A few words were changed, but it is basically the same history. The last few paragraphs were entirely my own experiences with my grandmother, Fanny Jenkins, Mason. I do not remember my Grandfather because he died before I was born but I know I would have loved him as much as I loved my grandmother. When my mother talked about him she always praised him and you could tell that he was a wonderful father.
I love you Mom & Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, and Great Grandma and Grandpa.
