These are fish species that dwell in fresh water, that is little or no salt.  Their preferred water temperature is on the warmer side.  These include the Basses, both Large and Small mouth, the Sun Fish, such as Bluegill and Crappie.

The diet is much the same as the cold water fish, ie: insects when the fish is small, turning to a more predatory lifestyle as they increase in size.

They have long been favorites for young fishermen, and many a young fisherperson has cut their teeth on catching Bluegills on a simple worm with a long pole.  They bite readily and fight with vigor with hooked.  Plus, they are excellent when filleted, coated with batter and deep fried.  They are some of the few species that must be heavily fished to keep a healthy population.

These Sunfish are the most common, and the most sought.  Their beautiful spawning colors are caught in this sculpture.

Often called the tiger of the fresh water due to its coloration and fighting habits, it is eagerly fished for wherever it is found.

While not as well known as its cousins, this warm water sunfish makes for both excellent sport and eating.
