Well House

Well House

Selected Haiku

(C)2002 Rosemary J. Gwaltney

Shrill shrieks of laughter
brazen birds strut across field
flock of wild turkeys

Trudge field to start pump
flip switch inside dim well house
cobweb snags my face

Package comes in mail
gentle face drawn and solemn
his ex-wife's ashes

Uninvited guest
bumble bee through open door
fuzzy ping pong ball

Bright lemon shines
stars of the mudded creek bank
skunk cabbage blooms

Nursing home lobby
lonely old folks sit and watch
finches in a cage

Cat leans over pond
quick tongue laps at own image
eyes scan craving Koi

Ceramic urn
her ashes repose
grown so small

Small boy’s wistful gaze
dark eyes in passport photo
New Delhi orphan

Tinge of dawn’s blue light
dreams like freight train gone at last
warm arm over me

Tiny face endears
intent enchanted gazes
baby’s crooked smile

Orange hen orange kitten
tease through sunlit chickenwire
feathers spread fur puffs

Cat runs smooth back straight
legs fast as pinwheel’s motion
chickadee for lunch

No blossoms this spring
old cherry tree stark and bare
where she used to play
